Fragrant Conflict Steinbeck quot;Chysanthemumsquot;...

Within Steinbecks story, Chrysanthemums, the main character, Elisa Allen, is confronted with many instances of conflict. Steinbeck uses chrysanthemums to symbolize this conflict and Elisas self-worth. By examining these points of conflict and the symbolism presented by the chrysanthemums, the meaning of the story can be better determined. The first time the reader encounters conflict occurs when Elisa is tending to her chrysanthemums in her garden. As she works, Elisa handles the flowers with care and compassion; she makes certain that nothing will come to harm them as though they were her own children; No aphids were there, no sowbugs or snails or cutworms. Her terrier fingers destroyed such pests before they could get started.†¦show more content†¦In this meeting, the tinker, a nomadic man, comes to Elisa and admires her flowers. Since the chrysanthemums represent interests, the tinker is essentially admiring Elisa, and at the same time he is filling the void of attention that Elisa is yearning for; this then causes Elisa to resent her husband, but at the same time she recognizes her beauty. After she gives the tinker some chrysanthemums, Elisa takes a bath, scrubbing herself with a little block of pumice, legs, thighs, loins and arms. (278) Once done, she admires herself in the mirror. She tightened her s tomach and threw out her chest. (278) This encounter gives Elisa a new direction. As a result of the encounter, she not only gains a new sense of value for her self, but as she, ...worked carefully on her hair, pencilled her eyebrows and roughed her lips, (278) she is thinking that the lack of romance in her marriage may be dissolved. The chrysanthemums are used symbolically when there is conflict between Elisa and herself. Elisa and her husband go to spend an evening together to celebrate the sale of some livestock. On the way to dinner, Elisa is still feeling revived by her encounter until: Far ahead on the road Elisa saw a dark speck. She knew. She tried not to look as they passed, but her eyes would not obey. She whispered to herself sadly. He might have thrown them off the road. That wouldnt have been much

The Basic Foundation For My Life - 914 Words

Sequence: I use sequence first, a lot. It is the basic foundation for how I run my entire life. When a task is assigned to me, whether it be at work or home, I first think organization. I think; where should I start, what will I do once I complete that, and what is the ultimate goal. I find that I organization solves a lot of issues when it comes to completing a task, or it completes the plan. Then, after the plan is executed, you can feel a sense of accomplishment. Precision: While I may have only scored in the as needed category, I feel that I do frequently use precision in a few different ways. I find myself always challenging things when somebody says that it is a certain way, just because. I find myself asking a lot of questions to make sure I get the best/ most accurate answer I can, and use that information to make a process better. Also at work, I really like to stay In the know, especially if something is changing. Technical Reasoning: My highest scoring pattern is technical reasoning, and I find this to be very accurate. For instance at work; Instead of jumping right into a new process and struggling through individual tasks, as some of my peers do, I instead learn the system that will be used to gain further knowledge. I will learn the ins and outs, find all the short cuts, learn why the information is processed the way it is, in order to apply the knowledge of the systems to each individual task. A Single Day Exploration Of The Cambodian Angkor Temples...

I thought I would do a single day exploration of the Cambodian Angkor temples, thinking it was just one or two piles of rocks I d be looking at, but I needed a three day pass to see all of them and I still don t think I spent enough time. The sun was beating down hard and climbing the insanely steep stairs of each temple was exhausting with the heavy camera equipment bag stuck to my sweat-soaked back. There is one hundred or so temples that were built between the ninth and fourteenth centuries and left for the jungle to swallow and for people to pilfer. Some of the temples have massive trees that have grown around and through the stone and now support some of the structures. It s fascinating to see the thick web of roots cascading down over the walls of the carved stones. Piles of rubble that used to be roofs lay everywhere and make me think, should I be walking under that unstable looking stone roof that hasn t collapsed yet? Some of the stone walls are leaning so far over that walk ing beside them is frightening. The movie Tomb Raider was filmed in one of the temples, a guide that works there told me, just before he asked for fifteen dollars for twenty minutes of showing me the best spots to take my pictures. After each drive to the next set of temples, I would climb out of the car and was greeted by numerous vendors, all coveting the valuable American notes I was hiding in my pockets. You need cold drink man?, come eat here, I know your driver, and you buy

Natural Disasters Essay Example For Students Natural Disasters Essay Natural Disasters Essay This being my senior project I wanted to look at a topic that I found interesting. Even though I find most topics in the fields interesting, none catch my attention better than natural disasters. I have always found disasters intriguing and have wanted to know more about them. The disaster that I found most interesting were Hurricanes. The thought of those storms with their power gives me the chills. Ever since I was in the middle of Hurricane Bob when I was vacationing with my family off the coast of Virginia and we were asked by the state police to evacuate our house, I wanted to learn more about hurricanes. Since that I have been able to take classes that enabled me to learn more about hurricanes. That is why I have decided to take the focus of my paper towards hurricanes. Furthermore, I am going to look at the economical affects that hurricanes have on the United States. There are many reasons why I chose to use this variable. The main reason is I couldnt think of another topic that fit into e veryones lives and had an effect on everyone. We will write a custom essay on Natural Disasters specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The hurricane year is broken up into two seasons. They are referred to as early season and late season. The early season starts June first and runs to September 10. The late season starts on September 10 and runs to the end of November. The date of September 10 is the midway point between the two seasons. This is the date that separates early season from late season. This leads me to what my research was about. I am writing about the differences between early season and late season hurricanes and how they effect the variable that were mentioned earlier in the paper. I feel that late season hurricanes cause more economic loss than early season hurricanes. I will start by taking about what a hurricane is and how they are formed. Then I will discuss where they are formed in relation to the seasons and why in these places. Next I will talk about the paths that these hurricanes take in regards to the seasons. Then I will compare storms of each season from different years starting in 1988 and ending in 1995. Next I will give a brief history about some of the biggest storms to ever hit and how they compare to the window of years I researched. The data from all the years storms in terms of loss of both variables will come next followed by the reasons for this. Finally a summary will end my research. The research of my paper will involve storms that form in the Atlantic Ocean and effect The United States and its neighbors. The main reason that I have decided to research this part of the world and not look at the rest of the world is I live in this part of the United States and have been part of one of these storms. Also the data was much easier to research. Most people think of the Atlantic when they think of hurricanes. The first priority is to find out what exactly a hurricane is. A hurricane comes from the West Indian word hurricane, meaning big wind (New Orleans, weather). A hurricane forms in the tropics around warm water. It starts as a disorganized storm in the ocean. When it starts to become more organized, it will be put into the first of three classifications. The classification is tropical depression. The National Hurricane Center will get a letter to help classify the storm. When the winds of the storm reach 40mph it will go into the second classification, tropical depression. The service will give it a name at this point. Hospitality Industry for Transportation -myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about theHospitality Industry and Strategies for Transportation. Answer: Hospitality industry can be seen as a broader canvas which encompasses within itself various diverse fields like lodging, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the tourism industry (Brotherton 2012). Therefore, it will not be too far-fetched to say that the industry is one of the fastest growing ones in the world and generates millions of dollars each year in terms of revenue (Brotherton 2012). However, some of the experts are of the opinion that the present Bretix deal is likely to affect the hospitality industry in a negative manner (Quinn 2018). This concern has been raised by a number of experts as the majority of the workers belonging to the hospitality sector are from the areas which has been directed affected by the Bretix deal. Some of the companies related to this particular sector are Marriott International Inc., Alibaba Group, Bulgari Spa and others. It is to be noted that the present lifestyle of the people makes the presen ce of these service providers too very important (Walker 2016). Therefore, it is seen that even in the middle of the various economic crises which the world has been facing for quiet sometime this industry has continued to flourish (Brotherton 2012). It is to be noted that the hospitality industry is an industry just like any other industry be it in terms of management or the development of strategies (Walker 2016). There are various factors which the various companies in the hospitality sector need to take into consideration for the process of their overall growth as well as development. Some of these factors include the nature of the customer service which they provide to the customers, the physical environment of their business, the management of the operations and others (Walker 2016). It is to be noted that to achieve success in the hospitality sector a company needs to take into consideration all these factors. In addition to these, the companies also need to take into consideration some ethical factors as well. The customers as well as the staffs of the company form an important part of the hospitality industry (Brotherton 2012). Moreover, important than the individual entities the relationship which they share is very important in the hospitality industry. It is to be noted that hospitality is one such industry which more than any other industry depends on the kind of treatment as well as the behavior which the customers get at the hostels or the service stations (Brotherton 2012). Therefore, the relationship between the customers as well as the various staffs of the hotels or the service providers becomes very important in this particular context. Thus, customer service can be said to the way customers are treated at a particular hotel or a company during their stay or meal at that particular hotel or company (Brotherton 2012). According to the Forbes Magazine (2018), companies lose more than $62 billion due to poor customer service almost every year (Forbes.com 2018). Therefore, the qual ity of the customer service which the companies or the hotels provide to the customers becomes very significant in this particular context (Kandampully, Zhang and Bilgihan 2015). For example, if a particular customer gets good kind of customer service at a particular hotel then he or she is more likely to visit that hotel again in comparison to other hotels because he or she already knows that this particular provides good customer service. It is interesting famous hotels like Marriott International Inc., Alibaba Group and others rely on providing the best quality customer services to the customers in a bid to retain them as future potential customers (Kandampully, Zhang and Bilgihan 2015). On the other hand, the hotels or the service providers which provide below par services to the customers often end up losing those customers in the near future to their rivals (Kandampully, Zhang and Bilgihan 2015). Physical environment is another factor which the various companies related to the hospitality industry needs to take into consideration (Ali and Amin 2014). It is to be noted that the companies or the hotels located in exotic locations have a far better chance of attracting the customers to their hotels or service stations than the hotels or the service providers who are located in the centre of the city in the middle of the made-made buildings and population (Ali and Amin 2014). It is primarily because of this reason that the hospitality industry giants Marriott International Inc., has decided to launch a new collaboration with the Italian Spa chains, Bulgari Spa to open new hotels in the exotic Italian district of Bulgari (Hotel-development.marriott.com. 2018). In addition to this, the company Marriott International Inc, is also entering into a collaboration with the company Alibaba Group to open new hotel chains in some of the most exotic locations of Europe (Marriott News Center 2018). It is to be noted that the various customers go to the exotic hotels not only to live a lavish life but also to get far from the maddening crowd (Legrand, Sloan and Chen 2016). Therefore, these exotic hotels which are located far away from the modern city, mostly near the sea and the beaches provide this particular feature to the customers. Therefore, they can be said to offer a medium to the customers through which catharsis can be achieved by the customers. Therefore, the customers are more likely to take the help of the hotels or the service providers which offer better physical environments to them in comparison to others which does not (Legrand, Sloan and Chen 2016). It is a reflection of this particular feature that the customers on their holidays are more likely to take the services of a hotel which is sea facing in comparison to the ones which are located in the middle of the city (Ali and Amin 2014). In addition to the above listed factors there are several other factors which the companies belonging to the hospitality industry should take into consideration in order to attain overall growth as well as development. The various companies as well as hotels belonging to the hospitality industry should also take into consideration the various ethical factors into consideration to not only to provide effective services to the customers but also to maintain professional ethics (Legrand, Sloan and Chen 2016). The first criteria, which the hotels or the companies belonging to the hospitality industry need to abide by is the Data Protection Act of 1998 (Legrand, Sloan and Chen 2016). According to the this particular law, the hotels or the companies of which the customers take the service of are not allowed to reveal the details or the credentials of the customers except in cases of emergency or during national security concerns (Brotherton 2012). The second ethical criteria, which the com panies or the hotels belonging to the hospitality industry need to take into consideration is the privacy factor of customers (Walker 2016). It is to be noted that the customers who take the help of the various companies or hotels like to maintain their privacy. These factors go a long way in determining the choices which the customers make during the selection of the services offered by a particular hotel or a company belonging to the hospitality industry. It is generally seen that the customers prefer to take the help of the services provided by the hotels or the companies belonging to the hospitality which takes into the various ethical considerations of the customers in comparison to the ones which does not (Walker 2016). It is to be noted that these days privacy as well as security is one of the primary concerns of the customers and therefore they normally take the help of the hotels or the companies which fulfill these parameters no matter how big or small the hotel or the com pany is in the context of the present hospitality industry (Brotherton 2012). Therefore, from the above discussion it becomes that the hospitality industry is one of the most flourishing industries of the world at the moment. However, there are several which the companies as well as the hotels belonging to the hospitality industry need to take care of in order to ensure a continuous overall growth as well as development. The major factors which the companies or the hotels belonging to the hospitality industry need to take care of are the physical environment of the hotels or the companies, the relationship between the customers and the staffs. It is often seen that the customer service forms an important aspect of the hospitality industry and the fate of the company or the hotel depends on the kind of customer service which it offers to the customers. In addition to these factors, there are several ethical factors as which the companies as well as the hotels need to take into consideration in order to ensure the maximum amount of customer satisfaction. It is g enerally seen that the hotels taking into consideration the ethical concerns of the customers in a much better manner are more likely to flourish than the ones which does not take into consideration the ethical considerations of the customers.
